Two weeks before the 2012 Carnival was about to start in Brazil, the state police forces of Bahia and Rio de Janeiro went on strike . Whereas in Salvador, the state capital of Bahia, homicide rates skyrocketed and the armed forces were sent in to re-install peace and order, the police strike in Rio had little or no impact on the crime statistics. Few policemen participated and the strike was cancelled after their leaders were imprisoned.
