Sunday afternoon in Complexo da Penha, Rio de Janeiro

The Complexo da Penha is an agglomeration of several slums in the city of Rio de Janeiro with a population of around 50,000 inhabitants. For many decades, the area was abandoned by the state and residents suffered under the arbitrary and violent domination of drug traffickers. In November 2010, it was ‘pacified’ in a joint operation by state police forces and the Brazilian military as part of the government’s pacification policy ahead of the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics Games in 2016. Two years after the pacification, housing and sanitation continue to be precarious and leisure, education and employment opportunities for the many children and adolescents in the community are still limited.
